DVIDS – News – 181st IW Adds New Missions, Divests Another to Meet Future Military Needs

The Indiana Air National Guard’s 181st Intelligence Wing is adapting its missions to meet future military needs and enhance military readiness.

The changes are intended to ensure that the Air National Guard’s capabilities remain at the highest level of readiness and preparedness to support the warfighter both at home and globally.

Beginning in FY 2024, Indiana will prepare to establish a critical care air transport team, known as CCATT, at the 181st Medical Group in Terre Haute, Indiana.

According to Air Force Col. Charles T. Goad, the 181st IW commander, this new capability to transport critical care patients will ensure the 181st IW is able to meet the needs of the joint force.

In addition, the 181st IW will have an emergency response squadron.

According to Goad, contingency response units provide the means to open air bases. Air Force Doctrine 3-36 defines the 181st IW’s future capabilities for contingency response, positioning Hoosier Airmen as the primary Air Force presence at expeditionary air bases regardless of how the base is captured, be it through an airfield seizure or in response on a natural attack. disaster

An existing unit, the 181st Communications Squadron, will also grow in terminal strength to augment crews in support of global communications in austere environments.

The Air National Guard optimizes the capabilities of the Armed Forces to address the Department of Defense’s Great Power Competition Strategy in support of National Defense Strategy priorities and maintain efficient production of ready forces.

As part of this optimization, the 181st IW will also divest its close air support operations mission conducted by the 113th Air Support Operations Squadron.

According to Goad, the wing looks forward to its future missions even as the 181st IW loses the 113th ASOS, composed of expertly skilled joint terminal attack controllers in fiscal year 2025.

Goad further commended the 113th ASOS personnel for their achievements over the years.

According to Goad, the 181st IW will be forever grateful to the 113th ASOS, whose members went through long and difficult training schools and made a tremendous impact during Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve. Their staff and achievements will be remembered forever

These changes will ultimately ensure that the 181st IW and Hulman Field are well positioned to meet the needs of the joint force statewide, nationally and globally.
