Floods in Nairobi: Raila Odinga donates KSh 1 million for humanitarian response, calls for cooperation

The meeting on Wednesday evening, April 24, follows persistent heavy rainfall, which caused extensive damage, displaced many residents and led to casualties.

Azimio leaders have urged the government to provide immediate assistance to affected families, recognizing the dire impact of the rain.

They have appealed to the government and other disaster relief organizations to launch a thorough search of the affected areas and provide food, blankets and medicine.

What Raila Odinga demands regarding floods

Raila is demanding that the government declare the flood a national disaster and immediately mobilize all emergency resources, including military response teams.

He stated that the Kenya Red Cross should launch a disaster support kit to support the affected regions.

“It is therefore our urgent appeal that the President and the government declare the floods a national disaster and immediately activate all emergency mechanisms, including military disaster response teams. The Kenya Red Cross will launch an emergency relief kit to help families affected by floods. urgent distribution on a case-by-case basis,” he said.

Furthermore, the opposition leader demanded that national and provincial governments unveil a robust information collection and sharing system to enable people to report and prevent disasters when they occur.

What has Azimio done to support flood victims?

While making the statement, Raila disclosed that Azimio MPs had contributed the sum of KSh 1 million to the Red Cross team to assist flood victims in most parts of Nairobi.

“As we speak, the Azimio MPs gathered here have already raised KSh1 million as a kick-off for the Red Cross in Nairobi for distribution to the affected people,” he added.
