Balakot and Beyond climax shot in Serbian Parliament, says director Santosh Singh

The upcoming streaming series ‘Ranneeti: Balakot and Beyond’, starring Jimmy Shergill, Lara Dutta, Ashutosh Rana, Ashish Vidyarthi and Prasanna, culminated in the Serbian Parliament. The series is based on the aftermath of the Pulwama terror attack and the Indian Air Force’s retaliation.

The director of the series, Santosh Singh, said that the climax of the series was shot in the Serbian parliament. He said much of the series was shot in Serbia and that he drew on his previous filmmaking experiences in Serbia for “Apharan 2.” He said the Serbian parliament provided the perfect backdrop and lent authenticity to the story.

The director told IANS: “We filmed extensively at all the military bases, at the air bases, we filmed in the state prison, we shot our climax in the Serbian parliament. We wanted an international-looking location for this major international council meeting where India and Pakistan debate each other. We spoke to them about where we could take up the role and they offered their parliament. It was so amazing, it looked real and so authentic. In that sense it all seems correct, they really helped us out.”

He further talked about how shooting in Serbia with the plane was a tough task as seven countries around Serbia had to be notified as Serbia is a landlocked country and the plane entered different airspaces of surrounding countries after take-off dares.

Clarifying the same, he said: “Serbia is a very small country and as soon as it takes off, the plane enters the airspace of several countries. We have to inform seven countries around Serbia that a shooting is taking place and that there will be planes flying that are not planned, so please don’t shoot down any planes. It was a big thing, there was always the fear that what would fly like an unplanned plane and get shot down.”

He continued, “The other interesting part was the shooting at the Serbian air base because we were shooting the real jets, their pilots were dressed as Indian Air Force officers and they were flying the planes. There was such a huge amount of planning behind the shooting. the Air Force was something we needed to talk about.”

The series leaves no stone unturned to bring out the authenticity as 50 real tanks from the Serbian Army were used for the shooting where Serbian soldiers pretended to be Indian Army soldiers.

To expand

He said: “It was very difficult to plan and carry out the shooting. Speaking of the army bases, we shot down 50 real tanks that we got from the Serbian army. Once again the Serbian army men were dressed as Indian army men and were running and doing everything. the exercises that were necessary, driving the tanks, fighting with the tanks. It was very surreal and very overwhelming and an amazing experience.

‘Ranneeti: Balakot and Beyond’ will premiere on Jio Cinemas on April 25.
