Letters: Office focused on gun violence needed | Opinions and editorials

Senator Royce Duplessis’ efforts to establish the Louisiana Office of Gun Violence Prevention should be supported and applauded.

The Louisiana Legislature has focused its time and talents on issues like immigration, library book supply, and transgender rights, which do not provide meaningful payback for the majority of our citizens. However, gun violence is the leading cause of death among children in Louisiana. Gun violence has a direct impact on our quality of life when considering whether it is safe to attend an outdoor activity. Preventing gun violence is an issue that directly impacts the quality of life for all of us.

While I understand the gun lobby and some legislators are against it, they are largely protected from gun violence. But too many urban areas in Louisiana are more violent than the wild, wild West. The Office of Gun Violence Prevention can implement proven methods to reduce gun violence without infringing on the right of responsible citizens to own guns.
