Saga Town C’tee Approves Petition for N-Waste Site Survey

Genkai, Saga Pref., April 25 (Jiji Press)–A special committee of a town meeting in Saga Prefecture on Thursday approved by majority vote a petition to accept a “literature review” for a possible final disposal site for high-level radioactive waste from nuclear energy. plants.

At the Genkai Assembly in southwestern Japan, the Committee on Nuclear Energy Issues, made up of all members of the assembly, held its second discussion on the petition filed by local business groups.

During the previous discussion, the committee received explanations from officials of related organizations, including the Natural Resources and Energy Agency and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan, or NUMO, which is conducting the study.

If the petition is approved by the full assembly, the mayor of Genkai will have to make his final decision on whether to accept the investigation. The mayor, Shintaro Wakiyama, told reporters he will make a decision after the Golden Week holiday period ends in early May.

The literature review, which looks at documents and data, is the first of three phases in the process of selecting a final disposal site. Municipalities can decide whether to sign up for the study, and those who accept the study could receive up to 2 billion yen in state subsidies over a two-year period.
