Bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh witnessed a boom in the tenure of the BJP: Sarbananda Sonowal

ASSAM: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday said that bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh has increased manifold during the tenure of the BJP-led government at the Centre.

While campaigning for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Parimal Suklabaidya in the Silchar Lok Sabha seat, Sarbananda Sonowal said, “With a healthy relationship with Bangladesh, India is implementing the ‘Act East’ policy to boost economic to stimulate development of the northeastern region. There has been a steady increase in transhipment in the region, with goods also being exported from Bhutan to Bangladesh via Assam.”

The Union Minister also mentioned that the Barak Valley region of Assam has historical ties with Bangladesh.

“To save time, money and travel expenses, the NDA government has also been working diligently on the Kaladan MultiModal project, which will significantly reduce the distance between Kolkata and Barak Valley via Myanmar and Mizoram. Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared Barak river a national waterway to rejuvenate its importance in bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Sarbananda Sonowal also attacked the Congress party and said, “The people of Barak Valley have suffered a lot due to six decades of misrule by successive Congress governments. Due to their apathy, the people of the valley have suffered a lot. led to corruption, lack of convenience, nepotism and depravity. We all remember the terrible condition of the roads throughout the Barak Valley.

He said the Congress governments have never focused on exploring the natural potential of the region, which has led to economic stagnation, unemployment and misgovernance riddled with corruption and inefficiency.

“However, with the BJP-led NDA government at the Center under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, things have changed. The idea of ​​’transformation through transport’ has been implemented across the country but special attention has been paid to regions like Barak Valley,” the Union Minister added.

Sarbananda Sonowal also highlighted the crucial role of the Barak River as the lifeline of the region, highlighting its significant contribution to economic growth.

He outlined the progress of various development projects in the Barak Valley and aligned them with the Act East policy.
